Drag racing is my
favorite sport
The Roar of those Engines
I enjoy other sports; football, baseball, and basketball. But nothing in the sports world fascinates me like the power of those high performance
motors. To hear the roar of those engines, to feel the torque, to smell the racing fuel, the smoke and to see the E.T. and the mile per hour
recorded on the signs at the end of the track is exciting to say the least.
Early Years
Well, if I am going to give my life story then I better go back and start from the beginning. My brother is sixteen months older than I am. So,
when I was born, Mother really wanted a girl. But I missed it a long ways I was a twelve pound boy. The doctor had to use forceps to bring me
into the world and that damaged my mother's health. My daddy blamed me with that and I was not in this world very long before it became
very apparent to me that I was an unwanted child by my dad. He constantly preferred my brother before me; he verbally abused me and beat
me badly on one occasion. Then I will never forget the time that he told me he would kill me. I left home again with him standing on the front
porch cursing me and shaking his fist at me. I lived for days wherever people would let me live.
Daddy was a very
violent man
Daddy’s Temper
His nickname was "Hot" and he lived up to it. He had the worst temper of any man I have ever met. I would hide under the house and even run
away from home because I didn't want to be around him. No doubt his own daddy's drunkenness and abuse helped make him the way he was.
I can still remember seeing him beat a woman over the head with a walking cane. Then one day in front of our house, he beat a man over the
head with that walking cane until that man began to periodically have epileptic fits and later died.
There was a time he took a pitchfork and split a man's face open with it and then drew the pitchfork back to plunge it through the man's heart,
but a man behind daddy grabbed the pitchfork and kept him from killing that man. I have only told you a portion of my daddy's violence and
some of what he did. This was not earlier recorded in my life story by the Pacific Garden Mission on the program, "Unshackled" because at that
time daddy was still alive and I did not want to hurt him.
I thank God that he
showed me I was lost
and needed him.
Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt
believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
(10) For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.
How you can become a christian
The Simple Gospel
Yes, I really enjoy drag racing, but nothing would give me greater joy than to see you too become a born again Christian,
which will enable you to go to Heaven with me. Here is how you also can become a Christian.
•Admit you are a sinner!
The Bible says, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).
•Be willing to turn from sin!
Jesus said, "Except ye repent, ye shall all like wise perish" (Luke 13:3).
• Believe that Jesus Christ died for you, was buried and rose from the dead!
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9)
•Through prayer, invite Jesus into your life to become your personal Savior.
"For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved" (Romans 10:13).
See how simple it is to become a Christian. I will be glad to discuss this with you if you want me to.
The power of preaching
Conviction
By the time I was twenty years old, I began to come to an end of myself. Years of sin, drunkenness, immorality, and the rock-n-roll world were
not satisfying the longing of my heart. When I was twenty years old, my home church, Harmony Baptist Church in South Georgia, got a power ful
evangelist to preach the revival that year. I always sat in the back of the church but now I sat up at the front. We were having morning and night
services and in one of the morning services, God really spoke to my heart. During the invitation we were singing, "Spirit of the living God, fall
fresh on me," and that is exactly what He did.
This was not the first time that God convicted me of my sin and my need of accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. The first time God
dealt with me was when I was less than sixteen years old. Our pastor, Frank Powers, preached a whole message on Hell on Sunday morning and
God showed me that I was going there.
The bible is clear about hell
Preaching
The Bible has some plain things to say about Hell. In Hell, they have no rest day or night, and the smoke of their torment ascends up forever and
ever. Hell is a place of unquenchable fire. Hell is a place of torment. In Luke 16 you read about a man who was actually in Hell and he said, "I am
tormented in this flame." Again, the Bible says that Hell is a place of everlasting punishment, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
After that powerful message on Hell, I left the service troubled. I didn't want to go to Hell but I didn't want to give up my sins either. Years went
by before God gave me another chance. When I was eighteen years old, one Saturday night they had a youth rally at the First Baptist Church in
Vienna, Georgia. I went be cause I knew a lot of my school friends would be there. A young man preached from Matthew 7:13-14. "Enter ye in at
the straight gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many there be which go in thereat, because straight is
the gate and narrow is the way that leadeth to life and few there be that find it. Once again God showed me I was on the wrong road, the road
that leads to Hell. I saw many of my school mates go forward after the message to give their heart and life to Jesus Christ, but I would not. Two
years passed before God gave what I believe to have been my last invitation to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.
spirit of the living god
Kneel and Pray
Returning now to that revival meeting that I attended when I was twenty years old, I repeat we were singing "Spirit of the living God, fall fresh on
me," and that is exactly what He did. I could not see Him but I know He was dealing with me about getting saved. I saw one of my aunts go down
to the altar to kneel and pray. It seemed that God said to me, "If she needs to go forward to kneel and pray, how much more do you?" I thought
to myself, "If my mother would go down to the altar, I would." She did not know what I was thinking for she was sitting four or five pews behind
me. But I had no more thought that when here my mother came down the aisle and knelt by my aunt to pray. I said to myself, "This is it!" And
down on my knees I went. I repented of my sins and received Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Oh the joy and peace that came to my heart! I
knew for sure that Jesus had saved my soul. When I walked out of the church building that morning, it seemed like the sun never shown
brighter; the sky was never as blue; and birds never sung better; because God had just saved momma's baby boy.
